Ski lessons
Becoming a good skier or snowboarder cannot be improvised, and taking lessons is strongly recommended if you are a beginner.For your own safety and that of other skiers, learning to control your speed is essential before you take to the slopes on the ski lifts.
There are several formulas for learning to ski, adapted to all tastes and budgets:
The ideal way to start and to get the first sensations of sliding is to take at least 3 days of lessons in a row and if possible 6 days. At the end of this initiation, the green slopes are yours and even more!
In Chamrousse, there is a historic and recognised ski school, the "Ecole du Ski Français (ESF)" with more than 120 state-qualified instructors, which offers lessons in all the resort's areas:
For alpine skiing: skiing, snowboarding, telemark, handiskiing (wheelchair) in Chamrousse 1650, 1700, 1750.
For Nordic skiing: cross-country skiing ("alternative" and "skating" techniques), biathlon (cross-country skiing and rifle shooting) and accompanied snowshoeing at Chamrousse 1600 - Plateau de l'Arselle.
- Private lessons (up to 4 people): to make rapid progress with a dedicated instructor - average budget 2020 alpine skiing about 45€ per hour for 1 to 2 people outside the February holidays or about ...€ for 6 lessons.
- Group lessons (6 to 12 people): allow you to learn with people of the same level in a friendly atmosphere - average budget for 2020 is around 145€ for 6 lessons per person, excluding February holidays.

For beginners "children" from 3 years old, there is the Piou-Piou Club, a fun and secure area near the snow front with a conveyor belt or a snow line to go up in peace and learn to ski with confidence in group lessons - medal included (in Chamrousse 1650, 1700 and 1750).
And if you wish, you can also combine childcare and ski lessons with the "ski garderie" formula, entrust your children to the resort's childcare centre "Les Marmots" and they will also have ski lessons with the ESF.
There is also the possibility to have your children or teenagers take group lessons (medal included) or private lessons (medal extra) with an instructor, alone or in small groups.
For "adult" beginners, you can opt for group lessons with friends/family or private lessons for two for a more personalised ski session.
- Beginner - 1st ski - medals "Piou Piou" / "Blanchot" / "Sifflote" / "Garolou" / "Ourson" / "Flocon": don't know how to ski - to get familiar with the equipment and the snow. Balance while sliding on smooth terrain on a gentle slope, snowplough turns, control of speed through serpentine trajectories and use of lifts.
- Class 1 - "1st degree" or "1st star" medal: elementary turn descent on a gentle to medium slope, direct track and elementary skids: rounding, slanting and sliding turn steps upstream.
- Class 2 - "2nd degree" or "2nd star" / "3rd star" medals: basic parallel turn descent on medium and varied slope, direct trace, basic skids and scallops.
- Class 3 - "3rd degree" or "Bronze Star" and "Gold Star" medals / "Arrow"... Improvement and competition
