Beginner's guide - Ski equipment rental
Presentation
Equipment rental
The purchase of ski equipment is the third largest budget item for a ski holiday, after accommodation and ski passes. It is therefore advisable for beginners to opt for equipment rental.Advantages of renting
➽ Saving time if you book: you can collect your equipment from the shop as soon as you arrive, you only have to try it out and have it adjusted.➽ A professional at your disposal: as you are not safe from material breakage or simply from a problem of discomfort, the fact that you can contact a professional on the spot is a real advantage. The latter will be able to offer you replacement equipment if necessary.
➽ The opportunity to benefit from almost new equipment, very recent and adapted to your level: ski shops regularly renew their equipment.
A few tips: take the time to try out and choose your equipment properly and don't neglect the "breakage and theft" insurance. Choose a sports shop close to your accommodation to avoid having to carry all your equipment from one end of the resort to the other on your arrival and departure day. Book equipment for the duration of your stay rather than on a day-to-day basis, you'll waste less time and it will be more economical.
Chamrousse sports shops:
Reservations can be made online, by telephone or directly in the shop.
Ski and snowboard equipment rental: Chamrousse 1650, 1700 and 1750 / cross-country skiing: Chamrousse 1600.
Equipments
If you've never skied before, you're probably wondering what to wear and what to equip yourself with for that first time?Equipment:
- for alpine skiing: skis, boots, poles and helmet (+ back protector if bumps)
- for snowboarding: snow(board), boots, protections and helmet (+ back protector if bumps)
- for cross-country skiing: skis, boots and poles
• Clothing
Even for occasional use, it is recommended that you choose "technical" clothing, i.e. clothing made especially for skiing, with minimum waterproof qualities (so as not to get wet) and heat (so as not to get cold).
These products are sold in the big sports shops (cheap items like the 1st price) and of course in the sports shops of the resort (good deal with the end of series).
Dressing for snow or skiing means using the "onion" or "multi-layer" technique!
• Top
- thermal underwear: a breathable layer to be worn next to the skin (1 per day and not in cotton)
- second layer: insulating fleece (if possible with a high collar)
- ski or snowboard jacket: the last layer is essential, it must be water-repellent, warm and windproof
• Bottom
- ski trousers (jeans should be avoided!): waterproof and loose enough to feel comfortable on your first runs
- socks adapted to skiing: thick and covering the calf
- shoes (running shoes to be avoided): waterproof snow boots with non-smooth soles or mountain boots
• Other: mask or sunglasses, gloves and helmet
Wearing a helmet is highly recommended for safe practice, and even compulsory during ski lessons. It will protect you in case of bad weather like the hat but especially in case of a fall. You can even rent one at the sports shop, but choose one that fits you well: covering from the forehead to the nape of the neck, and adjusting it correctly under the chin. A model with good ventilation will be more comfortable, especially if you are new to skiing, in order to limit overheating.
The ski mask will protect your eyes against wind, cold, snow, humidity and especially the luminosity due to the reflection on the snow. Alternatively, you can also opt for sunglasses category 3 or 4 minimum.
It is essential to wear ski gloves on the slopes, even if the temperatures in spring are often higher than in the middle of winter, at the top it can be much colder than down in the resort. Keeping your hands warm is essential for learning in good conditions.
Instructions
Adapt your clothing to the temperature outside and to your level of skiing.
If you are a beginner, don't overdress the first few days, you risk being very hot, a first layer and the ski jacket even in spring. Take a small rucksack to put all your equipment, a bottle of water, a picnic and above all the sun cream and even the lip balm not to forget! With an index greater than or equal to 50, it should be reapplied every 2 hours for optimum protection (even on cloudy days as UV rays pass through the clouds).
Moisturising cream, aspirin, arnica, relaxing oil, cream to treat a superficial burn, plasters for blisters... and the health book(s) up to date in case you need to meet the resort doctor.
As an option, you can also bring a neck warmer, heaters to slip into your pockets, under-gloves, or even pants to put under your ski trousers for those who are a bit chilly!
For your outdoor outings, choose a hat for the evening, small thin gloves or woolen gloves, a down jacket and treat yourself, it's the holidays, but think warmth!
