Born in Saint-Martin-d'Uriage near Chamrousse, Pierre Rebreyend practices speed climbing in competition at the Échirolles club.
A speed climber, he is faithful to his habits, repeats his range, concentrated, left hand, right hand, jump, the choreography is perfectly regulated, he is agile, fast and almost feline. The objective announced by his French team coach, Sylvain Chapelle, also from Isère, is clear: podium or even victory!
At the age of 24, his podium in the 2021 European Cup confirms his progress and allows him to gain experience in view of the next events, such as the French Championship or the World Cup stages. He is improving year after year, and this bodes well for his main objective, which remains the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Speed climbing is one of the three disciplines in official climbing competitions along with bouldering and rope difficulty. Speed is less in the mindset in Western Europe, we have been and still are in the culture of cliff climbing.
But of the different types of climbing, speed is probably the most impressive. Created for competitions, it is popular with spectators who are transported and impressed by the speed of the athletes on the 15-metre wall, with a 5-degree incline and a width of 3 metres per lane.
Two climbers compete in a speed duel on two identical routes, side by side, and at the sound of the buzzer, the athletes start their ascent and it ends when they press the buzzer at the top of the route. The first to reach the top wins the duel. There is no room for error; if a climber falls, he or she is disqualified.
The men's record is currently held by the Indonesian Leonardo Veddriq, at the World Cup in Salt Lake City in May 2021, he set a new record at... 5.208 seconds!
