The Church of Chamrousse (upper and lower chapels, linked by a skylight), built in 1967 (architect: Jomain; sculptor: Szekely; painter: Arcabas), bears witness to a true architecture of the plastic sign.
Planned as part of the general development plan for Roche-Béranger (Chamrousse 1750), the ecumenical center (today's church), built of concrete masonry and exposed stone, stands on a steeply sloping site bordered by two lanes.
To the west, a large corrugated wall lined with red cedar flakes provides protection from prevailing winds. A left-facing roof (with metal framework), sloping in the opposite direction to the ground, rests against it.
Inside, the altar, tabernacle and baptismal font are by Pierre Székély, in fire-forged Tarn stone. Arcabas created a remarkable mural fresco in black and gold.
This exceptional twentieth-century heritage is a kinetic dialogue between architect Pierre Jomain and painter and sculptor Jean-Marie Pirot, known as Arcabas.
