1) Mountain panorama

Chamrousse, a natural balcony overlooking the mountains of Grenoble. Perched at the southern tip of the Belledonne massif in Isère, the mountain resort of Chamrousse offers some of the most spectacular 360-degree mountain panoramas in the Alps:
  • Belledonne massif, clearly visible from Chamrousse: a chain of slender, wild and mineral peaks, often snow-capped for much of the year, which immediately give the feeling of being in the heart of the high mountains.
  • Chartreuse, opposite Chamrousse: distinguished by its limestone cliffs, dense forests and gentle relief, offering a soothing and very graphic panorama, particularly clear on a clear day.
  • Vercors, clear line where the sun sets in Chamrousse: it is behind its cliffs and plateaus that the sun sets, illuminating the Grenoble valley with golden and orange hues, for a moment that is both grandiose and soothing.
  • Taillefer, more discreet but just as spectacular from Chamrousse: it offers a raw, mineral atmosphere, with its jagged peaks and unspoilt character, its majestic presence enchanting the Arselle plateau.

Tip: use the Croix webcam to admire the various surrounding mountain ranges, which reveal themselves in all their glory throughout the seasons.
Favourites according to the seasons: panoramic views of Belledonne in winter, Chartreuse in spring, Vercors in autumn and Taillefer in summer.

2) Lake panorama

Chamrousse and its shimmering reflections. Mountain lakes offer panoramas that are just as spectacular as the peaks, with crystal-clear reflections, calm waters and surrounding mountains, ideal for panoramic photos, moments of contemplation or family walks:
  • Grenouillère lake: a different panorama in a festive and sporty summer atmosphere with water activities, which is a change from the calm of more traditional alpine lakes.
  • Lauze lake: an easily accessible and privileged place to admire the sunset with its reflections on the water, the sky ablaze and the silhouettes standing out in the background.
  • Vallons lake: a view stretching over the slopes, mountain pastures and ridges of the resort, offering a peaceful setting for observing the local flora and fauna.
  • Robert lakes: the iconic lakes of Chamrousse offer a unique panorama of several bodies of water surrounded by peaks, ideal for a wide-angle photo session.

Good practice: Achard lake is already very popular, so leave the spotlight to its fellow lakes.
Favourite by season: visit Grenouillère lake in summer, Lauze in early autumn, Vallons in spring and Robert lakes at the end of winter.

3) City panorama

Chamrousse, a natural viewpoint overlooking Grenoble and its valley. A unique panorama offering spectacular views of the contrast between city and mountains:
  • City of Grenoble: the capital of the Alps stretches out at the foot of the mountains, with its neighbourhoods, streets and surrounding ridges in the background.
  • Grésivaudan valley: stretching from north of Grenoble to the town of Crolles, offering views of the residential areas and Alpine peaks bordering the River Isère.
  • (Lower) Drac valley: to the south-west, it opens up towards Pont-de-Claix and Vif, where the Drac River joins the Isère, with small towns and lively villages.
  • Romanche valley: a wilder and deeper perspective, with cliffs, mountain roads and ridges that add relief to the urban panorama.

Top tip: 7 natural wonders that combine views of iconic peaks, high-altitude lakes and natural valleys
Seasonal favourite: sunset and the illuminated city of Grenoble in winter, the bright colours of spring in Grésivaudan, the soft light of summer on the banks of the Drac and the warm colours of autumn on the Romanche

4) Village centre panorama

Chamrousse boasts several resort centres. Here, there is not just one traditional village centre, but several lively resort centres, each offering unique panoramic views alternating between mountain ranges and valleys:
  • Recoin: balcony overlooking Belledonne and Grenoble, with unobstructed views of the surrounding peaks and the urban valley.
  • Roche Béranger: views stretching over the slopes, forests and ridges of Belledonne, offering a panorama of both lively and natural landscapes.
  • Bachat Bouloud: a village in the heart of the pine trees with views of the mountain and ski area as well as the surrounding peaks.
  • Arselle: a more open and less crowded plateau, with breathtaking views, particularly of the Taillefer massif.

Top tip: take the path connecting the different areas of the resort, accompanied by the Petit Montagnard trail between Recoin and Roche.
Favourite: (re)discover the resort while having fun with friends or family with the City game l'Aventure Perchée in any season.

5) Landscaped summit panorama

La Croix de Chamrousse, a summit accessible to all (or almost all). The Panoramic Park, accessible via cable car and footpaths, offers an easy stroll with spectacular views of Belledonne, Grenoble and Oisans:
  • Oisans lookout: a panoramic viewpoint like a balcony overlooking the Oisans massif with a pointer to the iconic summit of La Meije.
  • Rooftop: a viewpoint on the roof of the summit building with an exceptional view of Grenoble, its suburbs and the start of the giant zip line.
  • Himalayan footbridge: a unique experience above the Casserousse couloir, combining thrills and spectacular views towards Grésivaudan.
  • Belledonne viewpoint: summer viewpoint over the mountain range and the Robert lakes below, enhanced by explanatory panels.

Top tip: combine your visit to the summit with the Explor Games mobile game, ideal for motivating families with teenagers and game enthusiasts.
Favourite: the view from the panoramic terrace of the Croix restaurant or the 360° panorama from the picnic area

6) Photo spot panorama

Chamrousse, a panorama to be photographed and shared. Frames, letters and signs installed facing the landscapes make it easy to capture memories in large format, perfect for a selfie or group photo, with the mountains in the background:
  • Croix de Chamrousse photo spot: at the summit, a rectangular frame and a heart allow you to take away an iconic photo with the Belledonne peaks in the background.
  • Crêtes: giant Chamrousse letters installed in front of an aerial and graphic backdrop for a panorama contrasting Corten steel and nature.
  • Casserousse: spectacular natural landscape of mountains and sun shining through the hollowed-out panel of the Chamrousse letters.
  • Croisette (restaurant): round frame to highlight the panorama that combines resort life and the surrounding peaks, ideal for friendly photos to share with family or friends.

Top tip: go in the morning or late afternoon to enjoy soft light and avoid backlighting depending on the spot
Favourite: the iconic summit of Croix de Chamrousse for a souvenir photo with a 360° panorama of one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Alps

Bonus) Panoramic views off the beaten track

A more intimate version of Chamrousse. Some of the most beautiful panoramic views are best enjoyed away from the busiest routes and periods, offering a different perspective on the mountains, one that is more intimate and wilder:
  • Season: each season transforms the panoramas of Chamrousse, with a verdant summer, a flamboyant autumn, a silent winter and a luminous spring.
  • Location: leave the main routes for the secondary trails, which are always marked and authorised, for discreet viewpoints.
  • Time of day: at dawn or at the end of the day at sunset, the low light, silence and absence of crowds completely transform the panoramas.
  • Meet the locals: chat with those who live and work in the mountains; their anecdotes, perspectives and knowledge of the area offer a more human and deeper understanding of the landscapes.

Top tip: go on a guided hike or snowshoe outing with a mountain guide or leader during the day or try something a little more unusual
Favourite: discover something different with Géodézic's themed orienteering courses on less common topics such as culture or heritage
